History

 

The area of Fitchburg began in 1837 as a farming community with Dutch Americans settling the area a couple years later. The town changed names from Rome to Greenfield to Fitchburg. The area grew as more people came to the community. Although it may surprise some people, Fitchburg has been a town for less than 30 years. One of the biggest reasons Fitchburg became a town was the fact that Madison desired to annex it. The residents of Fitchburg did not want to become part of Madison. The question of whether Fitchburg would become a town or become a part of Madison went to the Supreme Court of Wisconsin. Parks and Recreation

There are a lot of parks in and around Fitchburg. The largest park in Fitchburg is the McGaw Park. A number of people come to the park to play softball, soccer, lacrosse and other sporting activities. There are tennis and volleyball courts. Picnic tables are plentiful. Hiking and biking paths go through the park and offer folks a great way to experience and explore the area. There are playgrounds for kids with swings and slides.
